Addictions and mental health: a need for collaboration and integration in healthcare management

Addictive disorders are considered as behavioural and mental disorders frequently presenting
diagnostic duality with other mental disorders. It is important to remember that both
disorders related to substances and those which are not as well as all mental disorders may
require admission to hospital in different ways: voluntary and urgent; urgent or non urgent
ordinary involuntary -not considering the penal code. Regarding admissions to hospital, we will
commentate on the unconstitutionality of the article 763 of the Civil Procedure Law which
does not imply its repealing. The current National Strategy on Addictions by the National
Health Ministry of 2016, the III Strategic Plan on Drug Addictions and Other Addictive
Disorders by the Autonomous Valencian Community Health Ministry of 2014, and the Heath
Law by the Consell of the Autonomous Valencian Community of 2014 will be also mentioned
as they are unquestionably important. The Decree 132 of 2010 by the Autonomous Valencian
Community Health Ministry which establishes the purposes for the hospital detoxification units
is specially relevant. The Order of 7th July 1997 by the Autonomous Valencian Community
Health Ministry as well as its being contradicted by the following and current Decree 74 of 2007
will also be commentated on. To sum up, the need of providing an integrated coordinated and
global view for both addictions and mental health in general as well as the need of supporting
simultaneous therapeutic programmes will be emphasised.
