Communication between parents and children and alcohol consumption in adolescents

Objective. To determine family communication between parents and children and their
relationship with adolescents’ alcohol consumption. Method. Transversal and correlational
descriptive study, random sample consisting of a dyad of 153 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years
with their respective father or mother. Results. The prevalence of alcohol consumption in
adolescents was 26.1%. Adolescents reported low family communication scores. Likewise,
there was a significant, negative relationship between family communication and alcohol
consumption by the adolescent (rs = - .223, p = .041), which indicates that the greater the
family communication, the lower the alcohol consumption of adolescents. Conclusions.
There as a prevalence of alcohol consumption in both children and parents. Regarding family
communication, adolescents were less satisfied than their parents. Less alcohol consumption
was reported for adolescents who had greater family communication.
