Motives for alcohol mixed with energy drinks consumption among Mexican university students

Objective. To identify the relationship between alcohol mixed with energy drinks
consumption, motives for the consumption of the mix and alcohol intake. Material and
methods. Cross-sectional study. The population was conformed of university students from
a private institution aged 18 to 25 in northern México. Results. The most mentioned motives
were hedonist (89.7%) followed by social motives. Both of them expressed a positive relation
with the alcohol consumption refered as number of drinks per occasion (rs = .233, p < .05
and rs = .225, p < .05 respectively). Conclusions. The motives for alcohol mixed with energy
drinks consumption influence in a significant way the intake of alcohol mostly by the amount
of alcohol or number of drinks per occasion.
