Gambling disorder is an addictive disorder that has been related with cognitive and
emotional processes that include maladaptive coping styles. This article aims to review
different perspectives on gambling and coping, such as emotion regulation, metacognition,
and experiential avoidance, which focus on subjective cognitive and emotional experience.
Moreover, intervention models based on these approaches are included, such as metacognitive
therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, or acceptance and commitment therapy, as well
as current empirical evidence avalaible about the application of these therapies in gambling
disorder. Understanding these processes in gambling is important for applying treatments
based on third-wave therapies, which highlight the importance of the relationship with inner
experiences, and may be useful for clinical intervention.
