Addictions, rehabilitation and social insertion, a challenge for Costa Rican society

Introduction: The problematic use of psychoactive substances with addictive potential\r\nis recognized as a complex problem that affects society in a wide range of ways. This\r\nproblem is aggravated when people who use psychoactive substances cannot be reintegrated\r\ninto society. In view of this panorama, we propose this investigation with the aim\r\nof making a diagnosis of the real possibilities of labor insertion of rehabilitated people\r\nwith problematic consumption of psychoactive substances in Costa Rica. Methodology:\r\nThe population was made up of 809 companies assigned to the Chamber of Industries\r\nof Costa Rica as of October 31, 2014. They were contacted by registering the company\r\nin this Chamber. Given the characteristics of the subject and because it is a first\r\napproximation to the subject, the present investigation is of the non-experimental,\r\ntransactional and exploratory type that is applied to new or little-known research problems.\r\nResults: The distribution of the companies that participated in the research is in all\r\nseven provinces and their production diversity ranges from the processing of agricultural\r\nproducts (vegetables) to complex industry and the sale of professional services. Four of\r\nthe participating companies express suspicion when hiring this population. Conclusion:\r\nBased on this study, in Costa Rica it can be assumed that people who are dependent on\r\npsychoactive substances who have been rehabilitated lack clear opportunities for labor\r\ninsertion, that companies feel fear and a stigma at hiring these people, which is reflected\r\nin the low response rate in this research.
